What are we here for?

The question arises almost every year, amidst grant holders and surely among others. Especially in this year, when the Forum celebrates its 60th birthday.

Yesterday evening at the very nice reception in Böglerhof I witnessed a lady, supposedly in her mid sixties, talking loudly about grant holders and their role for the forum. She complained, that grant holders are only here because of the receptions, only to get something to eat. Interestingly she had a big plate with a great variety of starters, eating with great pleasure.

But what is the real problem? Last year I witnessed a similar discussion at a reception, where some business men complained that grant holders "destroy" the character of the Forum.

When I attended the marvellous evening with Hannes Kar, showing pictures and films from past days and offering a great insight into the history of Alpbach and the Forum, I learned that it was the purpose of the Forum to bring young people, mostly students, and academics together. Otto Molden was a student when he founded it, Simon Moser his counterpart.

It is certainly not the EFA which is to blame for the misconception that might be around. It is a problem of the attitude that (mostly) elder business men and women bring along on their way to Alpbach. Sure, to build up a network is important these days, but giving something back to younger people, to help them develop and grow is definitely necessary and beneficial for all of us.

reich und schön?

Als gestern zwei junge EFA Teilnehmer, zugegebenermassen zu spät, zu einem Vortrag in das CongressCentrum kamen, konnte ich beobachten, wie eine ältere Dame in der Reihe davor, die
Beiden genau "scannte". Dabei drehte sie sich ca. fünf Male unauffällig (zumindest dachte sie das!) um und musterte ihre legère Kleidung - dass ihr dieser lockere Stil nicht zusagte, verrieten ihre herabwürdigenden Blicke, die ein "Ihr stinkt!" signalisierten...

Wenn ich mich auf den Empfängen (und auch Vorträgen) so umschaue, dann habe ich manchmal den Eindruck, als ob einige Teilnehmer den Sinn des Forums nicht ganz verstanden haben: wir befinden uns hier an einem Ort, an dem Gedanken ausgetauscht werden sollen und nicht auf einem Laufsteg - lasst nicht zu, dass die Idee des Forums von den Reichen und Schönen zur Nebensache degradiert wird! Das Knüpfen nützlicher Beziehungen, Lobbying und die "Seitenblicke" sollten nicht wichtiger als Seminare und Veranstaltungen werden...
Anstatt einen neuen BESUCHERREKORD anzupeilen, wäre es wünschenswert nicht nur die sogenannte und selbstbetitelte "Elite" anzulocken, sondern auch minderbemittelte Europäer! Schliesslich waren es vermehrt solche, die als grosse Denker und Erneuerer in die Geschichtsbücher eingegangen sind.

Um weiterhin auf die Akzeptanz und Toleranz für die Kollädsch von Seiten der Alpbacher bauen zu können, sollten sich die Organisatoren für das nächste Forum das Motto "lieber klein und fein, als reich und schön!" im Hinterkopf behalten...

(culinary) fusion am berg

die alpbacher fusion der geschlechter hat eine lange traditon.
hier am berg wurden viele ehen geschlossen - und fast ebensoviele geschieden. so vernimmt man es jedenfalls in lockerer runde der empfänge, die, könnte man meinen, die essenz des forums darstellen - in kulinarischer hinsicht in jedem fall.

heute abend werden wir ohne zweifel die engel singen hören, wenn christoph leitl als jamie oliver überdimensionalen ausmasses in den böglerhof lädt.

Cabarett group wanted

Like in former times, when the Forum was in the very beginning, discussion rounds between VIPs and participants besides of the official lectures were held on a regular basis. It was in that time that they participated also in a Alpbach Cabarett which was lots of fun for everyone.
Why not restart this tradition?

Depreciated Values?

In Seminar 3 Manfred Prisching (University Graz) and Michael Bock (University Mainz) talk about "norms, values and deviants". In the first two days the topic was how we form social norms and change them over time, in the third lecture the focus is on values.

All the common observations are there, from a total loss of values in the society (Werteverfall), the convergence of values and other developments, that all encompass a loss of values.

But is that true? Are we really "losing" values? Or is it just a change of priorities? Would be nice to discuss in a Kamingespräch.

"Der Sonntag ist ein Tag der Gnade gegen die Schwerkraft", sagte der Grazer Diözesanbischof Egon Kapillari heute anlässlich der offiziellen Eröffnung des Forums. Damit hat er einen Eintrag in werfts Zitatenschatzkiste sicher.

Roll over realism?

With reference to the fledgling debate about the concept (let?s maybe not use the contested term of "theory") of realism in Seminar 5, I have to admit that I am quite bewildered about many Europeans hectic rejection of this concept. At least on a theoretical level, I consider it quite appealing, given its simplifying effect. By that I mean it can by helpful when trying to make sense of international relations to at least bear in mind that states - to a lesser or stronger degree - first of all follow their national interest. How that interest is formulated and by which forces it is driven is another question (which, as far as I understand, is not being touched by classical realism).

So I?d like to discuss whether there might be some aspects about realism worth taking into consideration. A blatant denial on the grounds of "Oh this is so primitive" would be too easy an approach, and one that might leave out inspiring thoughts.
